The history of one project. Rating and Anonymizer

As we have already clarified in the first part of the article , what does the user need? All the same, only bigger and better. So we decided to improve the presentation of information, its visual component and add new services that may be useful to our audience.

One of the first, we began to work on what we later called the “Rating of Anonymity”.

This is a plate with all the parameters that our site can receive, evaluate and show how a traffic light is an appropriate signal. The idea is simple and beautiful, the site's (any) ability to identify System anonymity is extremely limited. Why do people visit whoer.net? To check vpn / tor / proxy / socks / web-proxy and so on. Accordingly, the rating logic is built in such a way that he checks this matter. The very idea of the rating is that you - must use the means of anonymization, and we must - check that you are not a woman in red, but successfully disguised :).  We never faced the task of making a test for people who do not use the means of anonymization. We did this - as a visual means, for people interested in their safety.

I'm not in vain, I draw much attention to this, from time to time, there are mentions on the Internet from people who do not understand the logic of work, they show screenshots of the form: as in a direct connection with a standard browser, disabling flash - they received 100% rating. Of course, a person uses a VPN and should look like you are on a direct connection, with a standard browser and more. Is there anything strange about this? Our task is to help you merge with the crowd and even help the crowd, learn that you need to use the means of anonymity a priori. Surfing the net with your real IP is tantamount to walking on the street with an open passport on your head. Why do you need this?

We have developed and accepted the dogma that the rating should not go negative, therefore, when you have multiple failures, the percentage is not as low as with one or a couple, this is our opinion, not the fact that it is correct, it may not even be quite correct, there was simply a desire to visually draw attention, your attention, to your problems, using four colors - red / yellow / orange and green. Why a traffic light? Because many motorists, turning yellow into red, jokingly call it orange.

The coefficient, this is the simplest formula, works in the range from 0.75 to 1.5, that is, for the same thing we will remove from 20 to 45 points. And the rating itself, fully expanded, looks like this:

A lot of questions regarding logic come about DoNotTrack and WebRTC. Why is not the included DNT considered a “failure” of anonymity, and the disabled WebRTC is not. And that such a person is very suspicious. Yes it's true. Answering the first question, I recommend you use the Ghostery plugin, which “nails” all the bugs and does not allow you to track through them, namely: various statistics, analytics, marketing, comment systems and other things. It is far from a secret that the hands of beaver corporations extend further, far beyond their own sites and projects. In fact, any third-party site that uses statistics transmits information that you visit it, what you do on it, read, look, buy, and so on. Initially, the DNT parameter was intended to prohibit this. But, like any good idea, it works more on paper, salvation of drowning - their work. We acknowledge the error and controversy of the logic with the DNT header, so the rating for it will not be removed anymore, and it will be given solely for informational purposes, what is it and that use a special browser plug-in.Actually in this article about DNT , a link to which is in the rating and it is recommended to use it. Therefore, the task of showing this item is precisely to provide information.

As if only then something didn’t work out ... "why did you show me about DNT here if you don’t take off the rating?" * Sad sigh *

As for WebRTC, everything is somewhat simpler and more complicated at the same time. Since there is still no solution that allows substituting IP addresses transmitted through it, and using a VPN and virtual machine directly, without NAT, it explicitly gives your real IP address, and through a router it usually gives out a Class A network, i.e. 10.xxx It’s far away, we don’t alone understand that this is a “disguised” person with a high degree of probability :) a character and even worse, if he gives himself up, his real IP address, user. Moreover, it has been checked repeatedly that many large sites have a bad attitude not to the disabled webrtc, I suppose that there is as yet no version checking of browsers for its support “out of the box”, namely to similar “leaks” through it. Therefore, in this case, our opinion is ironic - it’s better to turn it off and the more people turn it off,

    Anonymizer

Quite popular, as it turned out, a thing. At the moment, 9 servers provide you with web-proxy services, the average daily traffic is about 150 GB per server, the most popular in Russia and the Netherlands, there are 400 GB per day. To understand ordinary mathematics, 3 to 5 TB of traffic is usually allocated to the server, each subsequent TB costs money, from 5 to 20 $ per TB. This is a strong and entirely unprofitable service, designed to increase traffic on the project. The saddest thing is that traffic growth on it is not even geometric, if on Saturday we add a new server in Russia to “dilute” Moscow from 400 GB / day, then by Tuesday, we have the same 400 on the “old” server and on the new 200 more. Traffic growth of about 20-30% every three days, I don’t know how long it will be, we are even interested. But so far it inspires. Or rather, technically, we can expand to 100 and 1000 servers, the mechanism has been worked out, but in practice, it makes no sense, because yes, guys, it costs money. Moreover, other anonymizers, Russian and English, even write to us with offers to take their traffic and with the right for us to show ads to their customers, for free. Here it is. No, the anonymizer in one form or another will definitely remain free for now, another question is that I wanted to sponsor this service for as long as possible, but I also really do not want to write articles on how to unlock whoer.net. Therefore, when the ultimate and reasonable threshold is reached, all the north that we have, except for a few, will begin to work upon the fact of subscription. We do not like this option, but even more do not like the prospect of getting a ban in the ru segment. the mechanism has been worked out, but practically, it makes no sense, because yes, guys, it costs money. The most “funny” thing in the other, many “free” anonymizers that do not sell any other services, “infuse” your accounts to different sites and then sell, all of our logs are initially sent to / dev / null. We are ready to provide root access to any of our servers, to any adequate person, so that he himself looks at their settings and understands the truth of this statement. You do not need to take a word, we have the truth - everything is fair. Well, like hma or pia or many more, guys write what they write - a log and here is an example of how well-known services really work. Well, I digress.

Our anonymizer is based on the Cohula engine . and finalized together with its author, for our tasks. Initially, his author used 3 modes of compatibility with other sites, and we had the same thing, literally a week later GoogleBot somehow used it and went to paypal.com, but from our subdomain through it, our hoster right there The abuse arrived that we say a phishing site. The hoster did not talk for a long time, but cut off from the matrix, all attempts to explain something remained in his story. In general, an anonymizer that does not encrypt url addresses is evil. We redid the operating modes, but another problem surfaced that some sites cannot be logged in when the url encryption mode is used. At the moment, together with the developer, we are trying to solve the problem, and if it does not work out, then set up exceptions.
