Ubuntu is 10 years old! New Utopic Unicorn Release Available For Download

Canonical has posted the final release of the new version of Ubuntu, Ubuntu Unicorn under version 14.10. As far as one can judge, the new version of Canonical decided to mark a round date. The fact is that Ubuntu is 10 years old. The first release appeared just in October 2004. Over the past two years, more than 30 million PCs have been sold with a pre-installed Ubuntu distribution. Over the past few years, the number of PCs and laptops with Ubuntu installed has increased several times.

It is worth noting that in version 14.10 there is nothing revolutionary new. Developers say that all updates in Ubuntu Unicorn, or rather, most, will be of interest to developers in the first place. In addition, developers paid a lot of attention to OS security.

As a novelty, the Ubuntu Developer Tools Center is introduced, simplifying the development task for Ubuntu. There are all Android toolkits with all dependent libraries. In addition, the familiar to many applications LibreOffice, Firefox, Chromium and Rhythmbox updated. If anyone is watching Netflix, now it’s now possible to watch TV shows and movies through Chrome in Ubuntu.

The following applications have undergone changes:
    • Linux Kernel 3.16
    • LibreOffice 4.3.2.2
    • Firefox 33
    • Thunderbird 33
    • Nautilus 3.10
    • Evince 3.14
    • Rhythmbox 3.0.3
    • Unity 7.3.1

And the same, in the Server version:

    • OpenStack 2014.1
    • Libvirt 1.2.8
    • Qemu 2.1
    • Cgmanager 0.32
    • LXC 1.1
    • cloud-init 0.7.6
    • Docker 1.2

Kernel 3.16 now supports Power8 and ARM 64 architecture, as well as graphics chips from NVIDIA and AMD, plus Haswell, Broadwell, Merrifield and Cherryview. The core also includes support for the Radeon H.264 video decoder.
