Consequences of blocking for Telegram

Hi GeekTimes! A week has already passed since the confrontation between Telegram and Roskomnadzor began. I admit, I was really looking forward to the end of a certain period from the moment of blocking in order to observe the consequences. Will they be equally positive for Telegram? And why the same and why positive? - Because the precedent has already been.

    For iOS

Probably everyone has already heard about the Telegram blocking in Indonesia. What amazes me is how the growth in application downloads is increasing against the backdrop of this news, especially in countries where this application is blocked. The image above shows 2 AppAnnie Rank History graphs for iOS and Android devices.

In Russia, growth began with the corresponding statements of Roskomnadzor in late June. In Indonesia, from news of local ISIS groups that use Durov’s service. One of those I found on June 23 at Malay Mail Online. Even more characteristic are the peaks resulting from the lock theme that are noticeable on Google Trends. And no wonder, because everyone says it: WSJ, CNN, ABC, Fortune, Reuters, BBC, Washington Post, New York Times and many others.

Telegram and VPN topics in Google Trends

Probably, only a person completely isolated from the Internet and television is not aware of the latest developments. Digital resistance has spread throughout the country. According to Google Trends, VPN-related queries have grown multiple. But what happens to the Telegram itself in Russia?

Telegram and Telegram X positions rating in the USA for Android

According to SimilarWeb, its Android audience is growing, because Telegram X downloads on Google Play are growing. True in the App Store there is a slight drop. Also worth mentioning are data from Combot, TGStat and Telemetr. These services indicate an increase in daily coverage of channels by 20% and an increase in subscribers by 39%.

It turns out that the overall situation is stable or even positive for our country. With Russia sorted out. But the pillars of the Western media sphere cite the rapturous news. Therefore, it’s interesting to find out if such an unobtrusive advertisement influenced the popularity of the Telegram there in the USA?

Rating of Telegram and Telegram X positions in the USA for iOS

I draw your attention to the fact that if in Russia Telegram X rose from some place to 70th, then in the USA it reaches 6 in the App Store! Moreover, a similar phenomenon is observed in the UK, Canada and Australia. And these are, as a rule, the most complex and expensive markets. Go ahead:

Position rating for Telegram and Telegram X in the USA for Android

When trying to get position data on Google Play, I encountered a SimilarWeb bug or a specific service specificity, the essence of which I do not understand. The parameters indicate 2 Telegram clients, and the schedule is built only one at a time. However, the upward trend is also noticeable. Moreover, not only in the United States, but also in the Anglo-Saxon countries listed above.

No less interesting is what is happening in Europe. To display a group of countries on one chart, I switched to App Annie and selected only those countries where Telegram to a certain extent enjoyed popularity initially (Germany, Italy, Spain). Not everything is so clear here, but it is obvious that on the right already than on the left (I'm a professional). This means that there is growth, as in many other regions of the planet, to which our news about ILV reaches.

    Apotheosis

Now everything seems obvious, but how ingenious it is to build Telegram marketing on security, reinforcing it with the image of a refugee from the Iron Curtain. Any restriction of this security for citizens is a matter of freedom, which is massively circulated in the media. Excluding conspiracy theological ambiguities, I’m sure that maps still fit well here. I mean the popularity of the product among banned groups and the opposition to this from the states.

The human nature, or rather our behavioral factors and coherence motives, surprises me. The use of the Telegram by terrorists becomes a guarantee of the confidentiality of the service. Although I am convinced that for the vast majority, security is more of a “bright package” than the main value of the content (if you are not an offender).

Think of that famous Macintosh ad in 1984 shown on the Super Bowl. Steve Jobs played the same thing for us: Big Brother, the blue giant IBM, total control and Apple, as a complete contrast to these phenomena. Then there was no Internet as such, but there were stereotypes and fears. And we have all been identified for a long time, at least by passports.

If we decompose any brand into semantic layers, we will certainly find in the center of its communication at least one of human vices, such as laziness, greed, selfishness or fear, which in essence are the basis of commodity-money relations. And digging even deeper, we will fall into the realm of the subconscious, which is largely responsible for our safety and basic behavior.
