IBM Acquires Merge Healthcare for $ 1 Billion

IBM has announced the acquisition of Merge Healthcare , a company that develops solutions for the collection, archiving, viewing, and transfer of medical-related images, IBM said in a statement. The transaction amount is $ 1 billion, the transaction itself is planned to be closed before the end of 2015.

The deal allows you to combine the tools for processing and transferring X-ray and ultrasound images developed by Merge Healthcare with the capabilities of the Watson Health Cloud cloud service. After that, IBM will be able to become one of the largest (if not the largest) provider of healthcare solutions in the United States.

According to IBM Research, approximately 90% of all data stored by US medical facilities is images, radiographs, and ultrasound results. In this case, doctors have to consider hundreds and thousands of images per day.

Now Merge Healthcare solutions are used by more than 7.5 thousand medical institutions in the USA. In addition, the same solutions are used by leading medical companies from around the world, including pharmaceutical organizations.
