HabraFAQ about job search on the Internet

Part of the job search code on hh.ru
Most of the questions from our users are quite obvious, such as “Why the employer does not answer me” or “How to create a good resume?”.
But they come across very unusual ones, capable of pumping the level of anyone who has ever looked for work on the Internet. We tried to collect them in this note inspired by an example .
- Does hh.ru have a black list of job seekers and employers?
No, the blacklist does not exist. HeadHunter does not have it, and as far as we know, other services do too. In a dispute between employers and job seekers, the job site cannot take sides, therefore, the parties need to resolve disputed issues with late job seekers and recruiter-dreamers on their own - in 99% this is some kind of resentment.
But there are some blockages of fraud companies (for example, trying to sell their services under the guise of recruiting employees) and fraud seekers who pursue different, some unimaginable goals all the time.
- Will my resume be indexed in search engines?
All resumes are currently prohibited for indexing in search engines, even if the visibility condition “visible to the entire Internet” is selected. It would be great to open them, but for people looking for work this will only bring a headache (for example, it will not be removed from the search engines immediately after the user's desire), so we will not do this. As far as we know, other job sites have the same thing.
- How many responses, along with mine, will the company receive for the programmer's job?
A medium-sized company, offering a salary slightly above the market level and interesting tasks, receives about 5-7 responses from applicants per week. Of those suitable (those who can be invited for an interview) will be half. But overall, developers prefer companies to search for them on their own. This means that sometimes it is worth responding if a job / vacancy is liked - the competition will be small.
- Why do employers sometimes refuse without even looking at a resume?
There may be several reasons.
It so happens that a suitable employee has already been found, but the vacancy has not yet been closed - the very human factor. Therefore, some recruiters refuse without looking at the resume.
When responding, it is advisable to write an explanatory cover letter: brief so as not to push away, but in the case to interest. When there are a lot of responses, the primary selection can be carried out by a cover letter. I didn’t like it — refusal, I liked it — they read on. Let us leave such tactics on the conscience of those who practice this, but we must be prepared.
- How to make resumes more visible by employers using non-standard means?
Use in your resume text the keywords that are common in your profession, skills that a recruiter can search for. This applies both to the description of one’s experience and to filling out a field with skills. For example, in the field of IT, the top 20 search queries of employers in January-February are as follows:

Each specialization has its own set, of course, but its specialists can compose it themselves with a high degree of accuracy.
- If I have a lot of resumes on hh.ru for different tasks, will the employer be able to see all of them?
It can, but not always.
When viewing a resume on hh.ru, the employer sees the item “There are as many resumes of this candidate.” This amount will depend on what visibility settings you set in your resumes. If they are open to all hh.ru clients, then the employer will see each. If the settings are more subtle, you will see only those that are available to him, based on these settings. Therefore, it is important if you have a different resume for different occasions and that they do not overlap, then tighten up the visibility settings.
- Can they ban me on the job site and in which case?
They can. For example, you can send hundreds of responses per day with promotional messages in cover letters.
But if 10 employers complain about you, stating that you are late for an interview and are far from as experienced as you write in your resume, then the ban does not threaten you. This is up to you and those employers.
So if you use the site for its intended purpose, then there will never be bans.
- If the employer turned out to be ***** om, how can the site help me punish him?
There are two options in this situation.
1. On the face of a well-established scheme of deception. Here are the cases in which we will quickly tell the company the way to break the relationship:
- the company is not what it claims to be — it has registered under a false name;
- the company does not use the resource to search for employees, but sends spam with its services;
- the company is engaged in illegal or dubious business (for example, it is a sect, gambling is not in an authorized region, prostitution);
- the company carries out fraudulent operations (for example, re-registering a pension fund);
- these are MLM distributors;
- companies charge money from job seekers without guarantees of employment (for example, forward, for contacts, and not after the fact from the first salary).
2. He basically does bad with all employees, that is, he has neither conscience nor moral principles. But he doesn’t do it for the sake of deceit, but simply business does so. With such an employer it is necessary to resolve issues with the help of the state, for example, you can start with a complaint to the labor inspectorate.
- How to make sure that my employer does not find out that I am looking for work? But he certainly will not know that I updated the resume if I close access for him? Are there any workarounds for employers?
When you close a resume from a company, it will not be able to see it for any money.
But no one has canceled social engineering, this must be understood. A company may have several hh.ru accounts for different legal entities (regional branches). You will close it from the most obvious, but you may not know about the rest. Another option is to ask a recruiter friend to “break through” some people from under his account. But if they try so hard for you, then this should be nice, so you are worth more than this company is able to offer.
Another good option in our case is to close the resume from everyone and respond independently. Then the resume will be automatically opened only for companies whose vacancies you have responded to.
- How often can I update my resume? How will this affect his appearance in search results?
Resume can be updated every 4 hours. New and updated resumes rise higher in employer search results. Regular updating tactics work well if it is important to find work as quickly as possible, but professional resumes will be found. The general principles of this method work on all the resources we know in Russia. For those who want to keep the resume higher, but going to the site every day is lazy, there is an auto - update service .
- I want to post a resume, but I already have one filled out on another resource. What sites are available for import?
Direct data import so far is only from social networks of professional Linkedin and entertainment VC, FB, G +, OK and Mail.Ru. Recruiting sites in Russia (and in other countries too) do not provide an opportunity to duplicate resumes from one site to another. But there are workarounds: upload the resume to word and upload it to hh.ru from a file. By the way, this service we recently began to understand the Ukrainian language :)
- If I connect my account on hh.ru with Facebook (VK, G +, etc.), can employers see a link to my profile there? What data from the social network will be available to companies? Will social network binding information be visible to employers?
Facebook and other social networks will be used by you only for authorization on the site. The employer will not recognize any data about your profile (only if you yourself do not specify it in the resume in the contact details). Moreover, he will not even know how you go to the site, because only a resume is available to him, which is created separately. We don’t know about other sites, we won’t lie, but something tells us that this is the case everywhere, because there is no sense in a job site to “burn” its applicants.
- What days and at what time are vacancies posted? What time do employers make the most invitations to interview?
In recent hours, the dynamics of posting vacancies is as follows:

It can be seen that the time for creating vacancies is very tightly tied to the standard working hours in offices. The peak of job creation falls at 10 in the morning, and the main stream runs until 16-17 hours.
And by invitation and response, the picture is as follows. For example, Moscow:

And Peter:

St. Petersburg companies swing by 12-15 o’clock, and Moscow companies make a march at 10 in the morning, and then work smoothly until 17.
- Can employers see comments on resumes from other companies? Do employers have any resume notes, and do other employers see these notes?
Employers can make notes on the resumes of applicants, but only recruiters of one company see them, and then, if the author wishes, notes. Recruiters cannot make notes accessible to other companies, and we are not going to. Common sense dictates that this is the case everywhere. Yes, job sites exist on the money of employing companies, but such opportunities would go against common sense and business logic.
- Is there an auto-reject function on hh.ru?
There is no such function, and we will not do it. At the same time, the company can adjust the response form so that almost all resumes of the responding applicant are immediately visible. If the candidate is denied with these settings, then he will see a view from this company in his office.
Other sites have no auto-failures either. However, there is knowledge that one competitor had a response blocking function if the name of the resume does not match the name of the vacancy. This was exactly before, but now there is no information about it, but who knows.
- Why is it customary for us to indicate salaries in resumes and vacancies, but not in the West?
In the West, they also indicate salaries in vacancies.
In general, they have a more mature labor market, which implies knowledge of employers and job seekers about some salary standards that are rarely violated. In our country, people are often “overbought” with large salaries, in many areas both employers and job seekers are poorly informed about standards, let alone be cunning, and there are not always standards. To change this situation, for example, we launched a special project .
- Do job sites interact with each other for the benefit of a common cause (common blacklists, directories, data formats)
Each in itself, there are not even associations of Russian job sites :) But there is an international network, with a rather ridiculous name - The Network. It unites the largest sites around the world: from one country - one site. An employer may, through his local website, post a vacancy on the website of another country. It’s convenient: you open an office in China, and place vacancies on chinahr.com through your office on hh.ru.
- Does hh.ru “tighten” resumes and vacancies from other sources, and from which?
Only “their” vacancies are published on hh.ru, but, for example, Work.Mail.Ru pulls up vacancies from newspapers and magazines. In the search clusters on the left, they are highlighted separately.
As far as we know, other job sites also have only their vacancies, even despite the fact that RDV-Media (Rabota.ru) has its own newspaper, “Work for You”, and “Pronto-Moscow” ( Job.ru) is the newspaper "From Hand to Hand".
For aggregating vacancies from different sources, there is, for example, Yandex.Work.
- Is it true that few companies now use the services of recruitment agencies?
It depends on what “little” is. Compared to 2000, it is certainly less, but far from as small as it might seem. Here are the data on the cities:

We will be happy to help in the comments to understand what fell out of our sight.
