In the USA and Europe it will be possible to use electronic devices in flight

    Good news, everyone!

The message that the FAA is reviewing the rules for using gadgets on airplanes was received quite emotionally by the habrasociety. Therefore, I hasten to share the good news. In the US and Europe, passengers will be able to use portable electronic devices at all stages of the flight.

On October 31, a press release was published on the official website of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)stating that soon passengers will be able to read e-books, play games and watch videos on their devices at all stages of flightwith very limited exceptions. It is at the time of take-off and landing that electronic devices, books and magazines should be in the pocket of the front seat. Mobile phones should be in flight mode with disabled network functions (the icon with a signal reception scale is not displayed) and cannot be used for voice communication. That is, to call by phone, as before, is prohibited. If there is Wi-Fi on board the aircraft, you can also use it. You can also use Bluetooth headsets, such as wireless keyboards, for example.

Implementation of these changes in real flights will take some time. FAA has issued a special guide for airlines. Based on this guideline, airlines must amend internal documents and procedures, the new revisions of which, in turn, must be approved by the FAA.

As far as I understand, this does not mean that all airlines will be allowed to use mobile devices on all aircraft. The FAA had not previously prohibited this, but demanded that airlines guarantee the safety of such use without specifying how to do it. It was easier for airlines to ban everything. Now the PED ARC ad hoc commission has done research, an official report has been published , and the FAA has published a manualfor airlines, how to allow the use of portable electronic devices in flight. Apparently, there should not be a problem for new aircraft certified after 2007, but some old aircraft may not meet all the requirements.

Following the FAA, on November 13th, the European Aviation Safety Agency EASA also issued a press release according to which a guide for European airlines will be published before the end of November to allow the use of personal electronic devices such as tablets, smartphones, e-books, mp3- players, as well as devices in Flight Mode or Airplane Mode. In the long run, EASA plans to certify the use of mobile phones on board for voice calls.

UPD: In the comments there are questions about the ban on take-off and landing.
Firstly, the ban is not mentioned anywhere. It is said that the devices should be in the seat pocket. That is, listening to music from your phone is not prohibited.
Secondly, on news sites they write that it is heavy objects that need to be cleaned in your pocket. This is logical, but not in the original.
Thirdly, I’m not sure that I correctly translated the phrase " Electronic items, books and magazines, must be held or put in the seat back pocket during the actual takeoff and landing roll. ". Perhaps it is understood that these objects must either be held in hands or put in a pocket .
