Usability - Vacuum Cleaner Buttons

I suspect that the design of interfaces to household appliances is done by those who were not allowed to use the software because of their extreme unsuitability. metaclass

Recently, the topic of vacuum cleaners has been quite popular on the hub. But today I’m not talking about robotic vacuum cleaners, but an ordinary manual vacuum cleaner, which is in almost every home. More specifically, the power control buttons and the cord auto-rewind buttons.

Maybe some still remember models in which the cord was wound around a vacuum cleaner or even disconnected and stored separately. Buttons for automating this process were out of the question. When the design became more complicated and there was a need for a cord winder button, many manufacturers did not come up with anything better than making a reflection of the power button with a similar icon.

There is one plus in this approach - most manufacturers use the same location: on the left is the power button, on the right is auto-winding. This is more convenient than hotkeys. Pressing will occur almost reflexively. If your profession is a janitor.

Honestly, I get confused in these two buttons more often than in the keys of my laptop, although I have been cleaning every few days for several years. And this article is one of the attempts to understand what is the reason. Perhaps the subconscious brought up by soviet childhood associates a plug with a power outage? Or am I hastily unable to distinguish the same round icons painted in the tone of the entire button?

Be that as it may, my personal statistics show that I would use the rewind button an order of magnitude less if I had not poked it every second time the phone rang or the vacuum cleaner swallowed the sock from under the bed. So it could be made smaller and closer to that same cord. But for some reason many designers are household appliances think that the normal design will not work without symmetric key arrangement. What do you think is a habrayuzer?
