Lenovo ThinkPad W550s: extreme - its element
- Transfer
When you open a computer, in addition to power and external characteristics, the most important thing for you is that it works the way you need. In extreme jet cross country driving, we value the same thing. There is simply no right to an error - in this case, a system one. At each instant of travel time, the computer collects and transmits data to the team on the ground. At speeds up to 1300 km / h, decisions are made in seconds. There is simply no second chance, and no delay is unacceptable, because sometimes only a second separates life from death. Of course, the conditions in which we use the Lenovo ThinkPad W550s can not be called extreme, on the other hand, this is excellent evidence that this computer is capable of performing many non-trivial tasks.
To say that in North American Eagle a computer must “survive” in extreme conditions is to say nothing. Engine vibrations alone achieve such force that they can seriously damage computers, even those that are just nearby, causing hard drive failures and other systems to malfunction. When the car is started, the engine vibrates so that most computers nearby either turn off in a panic or quickly die from a hard disk rupture. Inside the car, the temperature sometimes rises above 55 C, and this is much higher than the maximum permissible indicators at which most laptops are still able to function. Since we often ride through deserted lakes, the laptop must also be able to tolerate the dirt that accumulates everywhere.
We have long-standing partnerships with Lenovo. The company has provided us with many workstations. Lenovo helps us push the boundaries of computing power — and with this they release truly “harsh” computers. When it came time to think about a new on-board computer for the North American Eagle, we again contacted Lenovo and asked us to choose a car that meets our requirements. The company's specialists proposed the new Lenovo ThinkPad W550s, which at that time was preparing for release.
This machine ideally combines the highest power and amazing "endurance". Despite the fact that this laptop is perfectly “sharpened” under extreme conditions, the price-performance ratio turned out to be ideal for us. (On the left you can see the video in which we open the computer we just sent.) The
characteristics of our new on-board computer are: integrated i7–5600U processor, 16 GB of RAM, a special NVIDIA Quadro K620M graphics card and the Windows 10 Pro operating system.
Naturally, the laptop has a 512 GB solid-state hard drive so that the computer can work with such strong engine vibrations. The real surprise for us was a screen with a resolution of 3K. Not only does he look amazing, he is also sensory. The computer is installed inside the Eagle, so managing it from the trackpad is not always convenient. The touch screen makes working with a computer as easy as possible. An additional advantage is the presence of two batteries: external and internal. This allows us to work longer on it, even when the car is not running. The battery holds the charge so well that we don’t even need an additional charging cord, besides what is in the car. We can even pick up a computer from the workshop and work in the evenings - without additional recharging.
Of the other interesting characteristics, it can be noted that while the trackpad became larger and acquired a smoother surface, the physical buttons disappeared. This may seem strange to a user familiar with older ThinkPad models. However, the buttons did not disappear at all - the lower part of the trackpad now performs their functions. In the same place, from below, there was a sharp border, which you may also have to get used to, but it is absolutely not difficult. This laptop will be very interesting to fans of the previous generation ThinkPad who want to upgrade to a more modern model.
In general, this is a great computer that can work in one of the most extreme conditions. Not only does it cope with very serious loads - thanks to its convenient thin body, it can be taken almost everywhere. It's really nice to work on it, this is one of the most prominent representatives of the ThinkPad line. Those who are looking for a mobile workstation that can handle heavy loads may also be interested in the Lenovo ThinkPad W541 and the upcoming ThinkPad P-Series .
